SUMMARY:Texas Headhunters @ Old RockHouse
DESCRIPTION:Johnny Moeller’s guitar playing is full of voodoo and lighting. The floating bent notes\, delicately singing phrases\, bursts of staccato picking\, and ringing piano-like chords that he sculpts into vibrant solos bring all the beauty\, power\, and mystery of the blues to life. Yet he’s impossible to pigeonhole. Although Moeller’s the latest in a long line of six-string wizards to hail from Austin\, he upholds the Texas music tradition not by imitating the licks of legendary Lone Star State players who’ve influenced him — like Albert Collins\, Lightnin’ Hopkins\, the Vaughan Brothers — but by being a maverick.    “The truth of the matter is I’ve never really tried to emulate anybody else\,” explains Moeller\, who’s wrapping up a daring new solo album. “There are lots of great guitar players who inspired me\, and singers and saxophone players\, too. But I don’t like to limit myself to purely one style of music. I have my own thing\, which is blues based\, and then I like to mix in everything else I love: soul\, jazz\, funk and rock ‘n’ roll.” \nJesse Dayton is an American\, Austin\, Texas-based Americana artist\, best known for his guitar contributions to albums by country musicians including Johnny Cash\, Waylon Jennings\, and Willie Nelson. He is also notable for his collaborations with horror film director Rob Zombie\, who has commissioned Dayton on multiple occasions to record music to accompany his films. Dayton was born in Beaumont\, Texas\, where he was raised on the music of George Jones\, Hank Williams\, and Lefty Frizzell\, all the while harboring an affinity for the spirit of punk with bands like the Clash. After touring with two rockabilly bands\, the Road Kings and the Alamo Jets\, Dayton ventured off into solo territory\, recording his Americana-chart-topping record Raisin’ Cain. Since then Dayton has released several different solo albums and worked with a variety of country rock artists\, most notably Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash on Right for the Time after Jennings injured his picking thumb and required a guitar stand-in. \nIan Moore (born August 8\, 1968 in Berkeley\, California\, USA) is a guitarist and singer-songwriter from Austin\, Texas. He studied violin as a child but later switched to guitar. His music contains elements of psychedelic rock\, soul\, folk\, rock and roll\, world music and blues\, with deep literary influences. After playing guitar in Joe Ely’s touring band and appearing on one studio album\, he spent time in Austin with his own groups\, first Ian Moore and Moment’s Notice\, then The Ian Moore Band. While attending The University of Texas at Austin\, Moore played in Austin regularly\, quickly developing into one of Austin’s largest draws.

Their most recent album\, Go Climb A Tree\, was released on July 28\, 2017. Gaelic Storm’s origins can be traced back to 1996\, when Patrick Murphy and Steve Wehmeyer joined with Steve Twigger and Uillean piper Brian Walsh to perform at O’Brien’s Irish Pub and Restaurant in Santa Monica\, California\, of which Murphy was the manager. SUMMARY:Jake's Leg Saturday\, June 28 @ Old Rock House Doors @ 7PM Show @ 8PM
DESCRIPTION:Deadheads in St. Louis know Jake’s Leg. The band has been providing music for the scene for 49 years\, playing thousands of shows to generations of like-minded fans who just want to keep on dancing. Maybe you’ve heard them in some dumpy little bar like the old Twenty North or at Busch Stadium: they’ve played’em all and continue to do so regularly. And the band keeps growing. \n\n10-year or longer stints with Jake’s Leg\, which is a remarkably\n\n\n\n\n \nIt’s not The Grateful Dead and it’s not supposed to be. While they draw mainly on the repertoire of America’s favorite psychedelic blues-rock jug band\, Jake’s Leg naturally bring their own sensibilities to each part. The introspective singer-songwriter\, the jazz stylings of an improvising soloist\, rock-solid dance grooves\, mind-bending jams: all are in play at their shows. The music can take you anywhere you want to go. And with their long-term unity and very capable musicianship\, Jake’s Leg makes it a great-sounding trip.

SUMMARY:Funky Butt Brass Band
DESCRIPTION:St. Louis is famous for its rich musical legacy\, one steeped in jazz\, blues\, soul\, funk\, gospel\, hip-hop\, and rock n roll. And representing the best of all of those traditions is St. Louis most popular band: the sensational Funky Butt Brass Band. \nSince coming together in 2008\, the Funky Butt Brass Band have put on over 100 thrill-ride live shows every year that have expanded the limits of brass-band jambitiousness\, defined by horn-heated instrumental lightning\, polyrhythmic boogie-down sonics\, dynamic vocals\, crowd-tickling covers\, and\, true to their name\, tuchus-taxing fun. \nThe Funky Butt horns are trumpeter Adam Hucke\, the master of multiphonics; trombonist Aaron Chandler\, the sultan of slide; sousaphones Cody Henry\, the baron of the bottom; and saxophonist Charlie Cerpa\, the emperor of embouchure. Together\, these brass kickers\, master soloists all\, turn a Funky Butt show into a parade of pipes\, a volley of valves\, a battalion of bells. \nRollin Ron Sikes\, the prince of the pocket\, the master of the march\, providing full drumkit wallop behind the band\, and on guitar\, Jim Peters\, the\, champion of chank\, the hammering-on\, pulling-off\, picking phenom with the seal-smooth movement around the strings and the guitar tone that rings like the bells of St. Louis Cathedral. \nThere simply is no band like the Funky Butt Brass Band. They dont just play the party; they are the party. So what will the next Funky Butt adventure be like? One things for sure: It will be a danceathon dive into the musical melting pot of your dreams. And what will that Funky Butt odyssey do for your funky butt? It will free you up to get down. \nLets get Funky. \nDoors // 7:00 PM\nShow // 8:00 PM

SUMMARY:Hard Bop Messengers Interpret the Grateful Dead Friday\, May 23 at the Old Rock House
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Hard Bop Messengers is a proven force in the St Louis Jazz scene. Regularly sold-out shows showcasing their original compositions\, as well as thematic deep-dives exploring other genres\, have galvanized their unique brand. Their Jazz Interpretations of Grateful Dead shows are musical cross-pollinations\, bringing new listeners to Jazz\, while delivering Grateful Dead to a new audience in a unique format. “Presenting the music in this piano-based sextet format showcases the compositions\,” says John Covelli\, arranger and leader of the band. “While there is no guitar-jamming Jerry Garcia character\, it’s been widely appealing to Grateful Dead fans\, as well as jazz listeners who are introduced to a new blended style of music.” Mission accomplished. \nThe sextet’s saxophonist Austin Cebulski\, is currently finishing his Doctorate in Jazz from Univ. of Northern Colorado while teaching at Univ. of Wisconsin. His pivotal high-school-aged discovery of the Dead established his appreciation of Americana as well as ensemble interaction and improvisation. “Performing this music with the Hard Bop Messengers has reignited my appreciation for the deep level of musical communion that the Dead achieved as an ensemble.” Patrick McLelland (piano) joined Gent Treadley\, Vince Welnick’s post-Grateful Dead group\, in 2006 and played shows with Charles Neville & Garth Hudson\, before settling into a residency at 55 Bar in Greenwich Village. “Patrick is our quarterback\,” says Covelli. “He’s an encyclopedia of Grateful Dead live performances and keeps me honest on our approach.” Upright bassist Chris Meschede and drummer Drew Weiss were familiar with the Grateful Dead music; however\, they admit to a previous lack of understanding of the culture. “It has been fun discovering what this music is about and why so many people dig it\, while putting a jazz spin on it\,” says Weiss. Meschede says that his new level of appreciation came with this most recent live performance captured in this album. \n“The group on stage and the audience are all part of the same collaboration.” “Jazz Interpretations of Grateful Dead” was co-created by Covelli and vocalist Matt Krieg. “For me\, there’s a level of depth to the musicality and the songwriting that I never appreciated as a casual listener or fan\,” Krieg says. In his vocal style you will hear a natural\, uncontrived passion. The 13 songs from this live show at Old Rock House in St Louis capture the raw energy of a live Jazz performance in combination with a Grateful Dead tribute experience. Early in the 1st set\, “New Minglewood Blues” shakes the place loose\, followed by a NOLA-esque “They Love Each Other”. Their interpretations of “Me And My Uncle” and “Just A Little Light” bring the swing\, while “Ripple” settles into the crowd\, singing along at the end. “Althea” is a 2nd-set standout in how it underlines the band’s approach of presenting the music uniquely. In the first of two encores\, “New Speedway Boogie” Krieg cajoles the crowd into agreement that “one way or another\, this darkness has got to give”. \nSpecial Ticket Offer: Buy four or more advance tickets and receive a free download of an 8-sampler of the new Hard Bip album\, which will be released on June 20th.\n\n\n\n
